We give a hand up, not a hand out

All guests at the shelter are required to be employed or actively seek employment, as well as participate in the programs offered through Family Promise. The goal is to break the generational cycle of poverty and homelessness, providing children and their families with a pathway to a brighter future.

Our Mission

We break the cycle of homelessness for children and their families in the Lowcountry by providing shelter, stability, and a path to permanent housing.

Our Vision

Every child in the Lowcountry will have safe, stable housing.

Homelessness is a hidden but ever-growing crisis in the Lowcountry

The face of homelessness is changing. Many working families cannot afford housing. “Home” often becomes a van or a couch at a friend’s home. So it’s often a hidden issue.

LOCAL FAMILIES ARE STRUGGLING

FACT

Currently more than 1000 children in the Lowcountry are experiencing homelessness.

FACT

Children account for more than 60% of all people experiencing homelessness.

FACT

In 2025, Family Promise of the Lowcountry received 800+ local calls for housing & rental assistance.

And the number of families in our community at risk of homelessness is growing every day.

Family Promise programs are proven to break the cycle of homelessness

Through our life skills training and support programs, 91% of families who participate in our Housing Programs remain in permanent housing after one year. Our programs include our Homeless Prevention Program, Shelter Diversion Program, Freedom House Shelter Program, and Stabilization Program.

We are funded by local government grants; individual and community donors; fundraising events, and businesses. In-kind contributions and donations also support families. We could not be successful without the backing of our local community.

Make a difference in the lives of children and their families experiencing homelessness.

Did You Know?

In order to afford and qualify for a 2-bedroom apartment, families need an minimum income of over $68,000 per year. Many of the families we serve are working jobs barely above minimum wage, and most parents work at least 2 full-time jobs to make ends meet.
